Commitment to the sustainable development of rubber resources
Sumitomo Riko Company Limited has become a member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) as of July 25. Established in October 2018, the GPSNR is an international platform comprised of tire makers, automakers, trading companies, and other companies that handle natural rubber. Currently, GPSNR has over 200 members that represent over 55% of the global natural rubber demand. These members strive to maintain and improve the value chain of sustainable natural rubber from a social, environmental, and economic perspective.
Generally, 70% of natural rubber is used to make tires, but 85% of production is conducted by smallholder farmers. Currently, the industry faces many issues. On the environmental front, there is deforestation, resource management, and biodiversity loss, on the social front, there is labor rights, gender equality, and land grabbing, and on the economic front, there is low income and low prices. In view of such circumstances, the Sumitomo Riko Group decided that it was necessary to commit to the GPSNR policy and become a member.
